CWB Volunteer Receives Community Service Award From Alma Mater

On April 13th, Ruth Hickox-Litchfield received the Columbia College Alumni Association Community Service Award for her involvement with Communities Without Borders. As a member of Pilgrim Church in Lexington, Ruth has participated in the CWB summer trips to Zambia for the past five years. After her first trip, she realized that the most profound impact she could have was letting children, from the most dire circumstances, know that they have not been forgotten. A longtime knitter, Ruth decided to organize fellow knitters to help her knit dolls to bring to orphanages in Zambia.

The Waltham Symphony Orchestra will play a concert benefitting CWB June 1st.

On June 1st at 8pm at the First Unitarian Society of Newton, the Waltham Symphony Orchestra will play a concert benefitting Communities Without Borders. Conducted by Patrick Botti and featuring piano soloist Lois Shapiro, the orchestra will play music by Bach, Mozart, and Sarasate as well as a  piece written by the conductor as a tribute to our friends and work in Zambia.

CWB Zambia: A New Milestone

Communities Without Borders (CWB) has registered a new non-governmental organization in Zambia itself in order to solidify a continuous on-the-ground presence in Zambia year round. With this action we expect to be better able to manage operations in Zambia leading to more effectiveness and better accountability and cost savings. We will also enjoy the benefit of the creative thinking from experienced and respected Zambians on our Zambian board of directors.

Out of Africa: Good Works by Wellesley Residents

"Out of Africa come many images of children with too little of what they need to survive.  The children's beautiful faces reflect joy and strength, but for many, their lives are dominated by scarcity—too little food, medical care and opportunities for schooling and work." Abernethy Award

Friends of Fumbelo, CWB's partner at Wellesley Village Church, has been selected to receive the Abernethy Award this year.  Each year that award is given to one organization in memory of Bill and Ann Abernethy and their many years of service to the Wellesley Village Church.  In addition to the honor of receiving the award, a donation of $2,500 is given to the recipient.  Congratulations Friends of Fumbleo!

Harvard Medical School Awards Dr. Richard Bail, President and Founder of CWB, Community Service Award

Dr. Richard Bail, President and founder of Communities Without Borders, has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine Dean’s Community Service Faculty Award for his work with Communities Without Borders.

Bata Children's Program

Through a generous arrangement with Bata Children’s Program, Communities Without Borders is pleased to announce that we will be able to purchase children shoes at a price considerably below market rates. In announcing the agreement, CWB President Richard M. Bail stated that “… this will have a huge impact on our ability to channel more of our limited resources towards the specific educational needs of orphan and vulnerable children in Zambia.” The cost of shoes today which are required for attending government schools is approximately 15-20% of our overall budget.
